Hail Damage Roof Repair in Austin, TX

Hail Damage Roof Repair in Austin — Inspect First, Document What the Hail Did.

Every roof repair starts with an inspection before an estimate. Hail damage needs an inspection across the roof, not a decision based only on the first visible marks. Widespread damage, brittle shingles, and matching limits can make a localized repair insufficient. The inspection findings determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

Step One: A Hail Damage Inspection

A hail repair starts with a hail damage inspection. Many times, hail damage isn’t visible from the ground. From a safe place, note visible damage and the storm date. Do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof. We walk each roof slope on-roof wherever conditions allow and supplement with aerial imagery when safety requires it. We photograph hail hits, dents, and soft spots, and check the interior for signs of leaks or water entry. Arrange an inspection after a significant hailstorm, when you notice a roof problem, or when nearby damage leaves you unsure about your own roof.

What Hail Does to a Shingle

Hail can crack shingles, dislodge granules, dent vents and flashing, and even puncture the roofing membrane. When a hailstone strikes a shingle, it drives the granules into the asphalt and flexes the fiberglass mat past its limit. The shingle still sheds water that day; the damage is functional because the fracture and exposed asphalt now age at a different rate than the surrounding shingle, cracking through over the following seasons. A bruise is impact damage: random spatter distribution, granules driven IN, mat soft or fractured beneath, often paired with dented soft metals. A blister is heat damage from within: popped-outward craters, sometimes in patterns, no mat fracture, no corresponding metal dents. Homeowners should look at ground-level metals first, then have suspect slopes inspected.

What a Hail Bruise Is

Why the Full Extent of Hail Damage Matters

Hail can crack shingles, dislodge granules, and dent vents and flashing. The visible marks do not establish the full extent of damage or the scope of work. We document conditions across the roof and consider damage extent, brittleness, and matching before proposing repair or replacement.

When Hail Damage Calls for Replacement

When replacement is appropriate, the scope comes from the inspection photos: the slopes the hail reached, and the vents, flashing and other soft metals it dented. On a roof replacement we include all code-required components — drip edge and proper ventilation — and document them for insurance and permit records. The new roof goes down over synthetic underlayment, with ice-and-water shield in the valleys and along the eaves. When we open a roof and find deck damage, we document it with photos and get your approval before proceeding. Sealant smeared over a damaged shingle is not a repair, and we do not leave work undone.

How Every Zilker Roof Repair Works

Repair or Replace After Hail

Hail damage needs an inspection across the roof, not a decision based only on the first visible marks. Widespread damage, brittle shingles, and matching limits can make a localized repair insufficient. The inspection findings determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate. Replacement is warranted when damage is widespread or the system can no longer be repaired reliably. Zilker Roofing does not recommend a full roof replacement when a targeted repair is the right solution. The repair-vs-replace decision is driven by the condition of the roof, not by what is most profitable.

When Replacement Is the Better Call

Hail and Leaks: A Dry Ceiling Is Not a Clean Bill of Health

This type of storm damage often isn’t visible from the ground, and may not leak right away. A leak is not the only sign of damage; an inspection can document visible and accessible conditions. When water is already coming in: an active leak, storm-damaged roof, or tree puncture needs prompt attention. Scheduling and temporary stabilization depend on weather, safe access, materials, and crew availability, and tarping is a temporary measure and is not a repair. We also diagnose water coming through the roof so the repair addresses the source rather than just the symptom.

Hail Repairs and Insurance: What We Do, and What Your Insurer Decides

Hail damage is a finding, not a verdict: visible hail strikes do not by themselves establish a covered loss — the policy’s terms and the carrier’s adjustment determine what, if anything, is paid. Coverage depends on your policy and the insurer’s assessment. Contact your insurer promptly about possible damage and applicable deadlines; an inspection appointment should not delay that call. We document the roof’s condition and provide a written roofing estimate. If your insurer issues a Summary of Damages, we can compare its listed roofing work with our findings. The property owner decides whether to file a claim; the insurer determines policy coverage and claim handling. Zilker Roofing is not a licensed public adjuster. We do not file insurance claims on your behalf, negotiate with your insurance carrier, or speak to your insurer without your involvement. We provide documentation and support only. Zilker Roofing does not use Assignment of Benefits contracts. The homeowner remains the policyholder in control of their claim at all times.

Before you decide

A few good questions.

Can hail-damaged shingles be repaired, or does the whole roof need replacing?

Hail damage needs an inspection across the roof, not a decision based only on the first visible marks. Widespread damage, brittle shingles, and matching limits can make a localized repair insufficient. The inspection findings determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?

Signs include missing granules, bruised or cracked shingles, dented metal components, and water leaks. Many times, hail damage isn’t visible from the ground. From a safe place, note visible damage and the storm date. Do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof. Homeowners should look at ground-level metals first, then have suspect slopes inspected.

My roof isn’t leaking. Can it still have hail damage?

Yes. The shingle still sheds water that day; the damage is functional because the fracture and exposed asphalt now age at a different rate than the surrounding shingle, cracking through over the following seasons. A leak is not the only sign of damage; an inspection can document visible and accessible conditions.

Will insurance pay to repair hail damage on my roof?

Coverage depends on your policy and the insurer’s assessment. Hail damage is a finding, not a verdict: visible hail strikes do not by themselves establish a covered loss — the policy’s terms and the carrier’s adjustment determine what, if anything, is paid. Contact your insurer promptly about possible damage and applicable deadlines; an inspection appointment should not delay that call. Will Zilker Roofing file my hail claim or take it over?

No. We don’t file claims for you. The property owner decides whether to file a claim; the insurer determines policy coverage and claim handling. Zilker Roofing does not use Assignment of Benefits contracts. The homeowner remains the policyholder in control of their claim at all times. We never ask customers to sign over their insurance rights to us.

Are impact-resistant shingles worth considering after hail damage?

Some shingles are tested and marketed for impact resistance, but a rating does not mean a roof cannot be damaged by hail. Any insurance discount depends on the insurer and policy; ask your insurer before treating a discount as part of the material decision. The written proposal should name the product and rating being considered.

What warranty comes with a hail damage repair?

Repairs carry a 2-year workmanship warranty. We document the applicable terms in writing.
