Roofing and energy use

What makes a roof more efficient?

Roof color, reflectance, insulation, and ventilation work as part of the building. Results depend on the product, roof, and home; compare documented product properties rather than a promised utility-bill saving.

Why Energy Efficiency Matters in a Roof?

In Austin’s hot climate, your roof plays a huge role in how hard your HVAC system has to work. The right roofing system can: Reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat; Keep attic temperatures lower; Reduce cooling costs in spring and summer; Extend the lifespan of your roof and HVAC system.

Energy-Saving Roofing Materials

Energy-saving roofing material options presented on the page: Cool Roof Shingles, Metal Roofing, Tile Roofing, and Flat Roof Coatings.

Roof Ventilation Matters Too

Even the best shingles won’t help much without proper ventilation. That’s why we include attic ventilation in every full roof replacement: Ridge vents and soffit vents let hot air escape; Reduces risk of trapped moisture and heat buildup; Helps your home stay cooler without overworking the A/C. Bonus: Proper airflow can extend the life of your shingles and prevent mildew.

Radiant Barriers and Underlayment Upgrades

For even better energy performance: Add a radiant barrier inside your attic; Use reflective or insulating synthetic underlayments; Install decking with foil-backing if roof is fully redecked.

Before you decide

A few good questions.

How long do roofs typically last?

Central Texas UV, heat, thermal cycling, and hail shorten roofing life compared with manufacturer marketing ranges. Asphalt shingles have a broad 10–20-year range; product and installation affect where a roof falls within it. Standing-seam metal commonly lasts 40–70 years. Tile and slate can last 50+ years as materials, though the underlayment beneath tile needs replacement sooner. TPO membranes commonly last 20–30 years. Ventilation, installation quality, and maintenance affect the life a particular roof delivers. These are material ranges, not a diagnosis of an individual roof.

What steps are involved in a comprehensive roof inspection?

A thorough inspection includes examining shingles, flashing, ventilation, gutters, and checking for leaks or structural damage.
