What Is Thermal Splitting?

A shingle spends every day growing and shrinking: a dark roof in Texas sun can swing well over 100°F between afternoon and dawn, and the shingle must stretch and relax with each cycle. Young asphalt tolerates this; as the oils that keep it pliable evaporate over years — faster over a poorly ventilated, overheated attic — the material hardens until a routine contraction exceeds its remaining elasticity and it cracks. Splitting begins as surface craze lines in the granule layer and matures into through-cracks that admit water, often following deck seams or running randomly in a map pattern across the most sun-exposed slopes. Once splitting is general, the roof is chemically finished: the same brittleness that cracked one shingle pervades all of them, individual replacements crack in turn, and even walking the roof causes fractures. Homeowners spot curled, clawed, or visibly cracked shingles and brittle corners that snap rather than bend. The remedy at that stage is replacement, and ventilation correction so the next roof ages slower.
