What Is Box Vent?

A box vent is a static exhaust vent: a hooded metal or plastic box set over a hole cut in the roof deck near the ridge, with a flange that laps under the shingles above and over the shingles below. It has no moving parts and no power - hot attic air rises and escapes through it by convection, drawn by cooler air entering at the soffits. Because each vent exhausts only the attic area near its opening, a roof relying on box vents typically carries a row of them spaced along the upper slope, and hot dead zones can persist between them - the reason continuous ridge vents exhaust more evenly on roofs with enough ridge length. Box vents earn their place where ridge vents cannot work: hip roofs with little or no ridge line, short or chopped-up roof sections, and additions. They fail at the flashing flange - rusted, nail-sealed, or lifted metal lets wind-driven rain in - and their hoods dent visibly in hail, which is why adjusters read box vents, along with other soft metals, as evidence of storm severity. Homeowners can spot trouble from the attic: daylight where the flange has lifted, or rust streaks below the vent. Replacement is inexpensive during a re-roof, and matching the exhaust type across the roof matters more than the brand: mixing box vents with ridge vents or powered fans on the same attic lets one exhaust vent pull air backwards through another, bringing weather with it.
