Pitch is written as inches of vertical rise per 12 inches of horizontal run — a 6:12 roof rises six inches per foot. The number sorts roofs into classes with hard boundaries. Below 2:12, water moves too slowly for any shingle to shed it; code requires a membrane system (TPO, modified bitumen). From 2:12 to just under 4:12, shingles are allowed only with enhanced underlayment because wind can push water uphill under the laps. From 4:12 up, standard shingle practice applies. Pitch also drives cost independently of area: above roughly 7:12 a roof stops being safely walkable, requiring harnesses, roof jacks, and slower work, and steep-slope labor charges reflect it. Homeowners can estimate pitch from a ladder with a level and tape, or from attic rafters. Mismatched material and pitch is a classic inspection finding — shingles on a 1:12 porch roof will leak by design, and no repair short of the correct membrane fixes them.
